SUMMARY
Stems clustered, to 1.5 m tall, 0.5 cm diameter, dark reddish brown at the base, dull green by crownshaft, with abundant dark reddish brown scales. Leaves pinnate or undivided; sheaths 6–8 cm long, dull green with scattered dark reddish brown scales; petioles 2.5–8 cm long; rachis 12–20 cm long; pinnae 2–15 per side of rachis, or leaf undivided, bi- or concolorous, pinnae when present linear to sigmoid, regularly arranged, closely to widely spaced, the middle ones 10–25 cm long, 1–2.5 cm wide. Inflorescences pendulous, spicate; peduncles less than 1 cm long, 2 mm wide; rachillae, 4–6 cm long, straight or slightly zig-zag, 1 mm in cross-section, glabrous; triads arranged distichously, superficial on rachillae. Male flowers 6 mm long, sessile; sepals 0.5 mm long, acute, slightly joined at the base; petals 4–6 mm long, triangular, valvate; stamens c. 9; female flowers c. 3 x 3 mm; sepals c. 2 mm long, acuminate, minutely ciliate; petals c. 2 mm long, minutely ciliate. Fruits spindle-shaped to curved when young, swelling to become narrow ellipsoid at maturity, 1.3–2 cm long, 0.35-0.5 cm diameter, red.
