SUMMARY
Stems clustered, to 2.5 m tall, 1.5 cm diameter, dark purplish brown at the base, green near the crownshaft. Leaves pinnate; sheaths 14–27 cm long, yellowish with brown scales; petioles 10–13 cm long; rachis to 0.7 m long; pinnae 8–13 per side of rachis, usually mottled, somewhat discolorous, linear, regularly arranged, closely spaced, the middle ones 30–35 cm long, 1.3–1.6 cm wide. Inflorescences pendulous or sometimes erect, spicate or with up to 4 rachillae; peduncles 10–18 mm long, 2–3 mm wide; rachis, if developed, very short, to 5 mm long; rachillae 1–4, 5–20 cm long, straight, circular in cross-section, glabrous; triads arranged distichously, superficial on rachillae. Male flowers not recorded; female flowers c. 2.5 mm long; sepals c. 2 x 2 mm, rounded, minutely ciliate; petals c. 2 x 2 mm, minutely ciliate. Fruits ovoid to spindle-shaped, to 1.5 cm long, 1 cm diameter, ripening red to black.
