SUMMARY
Moderately robust erect rattan to 5 m tall. Stem dimensions not known but probably at least 5 cm diam. Leaves ecirrate; sheath ± open, armed with partial whorls of flattened black spines to 3 cm long, with pale bases thickened and coalescing laterally to form low ridges, abundant groups of much smaller black spines interspersed with large spines; flagellum apparently lacking; petiole probably exceeding 50 cm long, c. 1–1.2 cm diam., rounded abaxially, deeply channelled adaxially, armed on both surfaces with whorls of large and small spines as the body of the sheath; rachis to 1.5 m long, armed as the petiole; leaflets numerous, arranged irregularly in groups of 2–6 held in the same plane, terminal leaflets not joined, the longest leaflets in mid-leaf to 40 x 2 cm, dark green adaxially with 3 bristly prominent veins, paler abaxially but lacking indumentum and bristles. Inflorescence male unknown. Female inflorescences ± erect, at least 80 cm long, branched to 2 orders, partial inflorescences to 40 cm long; bracts on main axis and first order branches tattering to the base; rachillae 1–23 cm long, densely covered with crowded flower groups. Flowers not seen. Fruit very broadly ellipsoid, almost globose, c. 1.9 x 1.4–1.5 cm, with a short abrupt beak, scales very dark, almost blackish, but chestnut brown at their bases, very shallowly channelled, arranged in 16 vertical rows, the scale margins fimbriate. Seed ellipsoid, c. 1.1 x 1.0 x 0.8 cm, flattened on one side, the surface deeply pitted and channelled, appearing like a human brain; endosperm deeply ruminate; embryo basal. Seedling leaf not known.
