SUMMARY
Clustering, moderately robust rattan producing dense thickets. Stems climbing to 30 m long, without sheaths to 2 cm diam., with sheaths to c. 3.5 cm diam., internodes 25–30 cm long. Leaves cirrate; sheaths dull brownish green, very densely armed with slender black horizontal or slightly erect spines to 3.5 cm long and abundant chocolate-coloured indumentum; knee conspicuous; ocrea not developed; petiole 20–35 cm long, armed near the base as the leaf sheath, distally more sparsely armed; rachis to 1.5 m long; cirrus to 1.25 m long; leaflets c. 80 on each side of the rachis, regularly arranged, rather close set, the longest to 45 x 1.5 cm, armed with bristles on 3 nerves adaxially, along the margins and abaxially along the mid-nerve. Inflorescences erect, ± sessile, the male and female superficially similar, but the male branched to 3 orders and the female to 2 orders, the whole inflorescence to c. 35 cm long, 12 cm wide; prophyll boat shaped with a beak to 10 cm long, and very densely armed with slender black spines to 4 cm long, usually less, arranged in horizontal groups, and dense dark indumentum, the prophyll enclosing the entire inflorescence with all its bracts, all bracts splitting at anthesis but bract tips usually remaining captured within the tip of the prophyll; rachillae very densely crowded, male to 1 x 0.1 cm, female to 5 x 0.3 cm. Mature fruit rounded, 2 cm diam., with a short beak to 0.15. x 0.15 cm, and covered in 18–21 vertical rows of cinnamon brown, channelled scales with paler margins. Seed rounded, irregularly angled, c. 1.5 cm diam.; endosperm deeply ruminate. Seedling leaf with c. 8 crowded leaflets.
